I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct. I am not sure if "it was shown that..." is the phrase I should use, but I couldn't remember any better phrase.

A panic spread as the man started screaming and brandishing a machete in the supermarket. When he was tasered and arrested, it was shown that the machete was actually a cheap plastic replica.

I'd remove the indefinite article at the beginning and start with "Panic spread ...".
