Can anyone help me with a sentence from Abraham Verghese's marvellous novel Cutting for Stone? Here it is:

Ghosh’s equivalent of perfect pitch was to be able to tell the heart rate without a watch.

What does the "perfect pitch" exactly mean in this context?

Thank you.

Hi blueeye,

perfect pitch = absolute pitch = the precise pitch of an isolated tone, as established by its rate of vibration measured on a standard scale

pitch = Acoustics. The distinctive quality of a sound, dependent primarily on the frequency of the sound waves produced by its source

absolute pitch: Definition from Answers.com

Regards,

V.

Perfect pitch, also known as absolute pitch, is the ability to name or reproduce a musical note without referring to an external source, such as a musical instrument or tuning fork. Being able to count someone's heart rate without a watch or timer of some kind is a similarly rare skill.
