As a Brit, but not a teacher, I would have said: "recovered".
"Salvage" is a maritime law term that essentially represents the "spoils" recovered from a wreck, that are divided up amongst the crew of the vessel that recovered them. Bodies would, hopefully, not be treated in that way.
"Saved" implies that they were brought up alive, whereas calling them bodies pre-assumes that they are dead.
