A recent sex scandal involving a couple of ministers seems to become a nail in the government's coffin. As the more witnesses come forward, the prime minister's efforts to calm the situation down are doom to fail.

A recent sex scandal involving a couple of ministers seems to have become a nail in the government's coffin. As the more witnesses come forward, the prime minister's efforts to calm the situation down are doomed to fail.

We would say "the last nail in the government's coffin" and would only use it if the government is, in fact, falling or has already fallen.
