Hi,

Could anyone help me with the sentence in bold? I don't quite understand.

There are informational uses of televisual news for the viewers, particularly in their roles as consumer, employee, and, above all, as citizen and voter. Here Jensen (1995) discerns a tension in the interview material from his respondents between 'the active and public uses that are associated with the news genre in a political perspective and .. its more limited practical relevance for audiences in terms of "keeping up" with issues for the purpose of conversation or voting in political elections.'

Thanks a lot.

It means that audiences watch the news to get something to talk or to decide which party they support, while news is associated with having a public role to play and actively participate in events. ;-)
