(1) Yes, you are correct: the word "poll" can mean different things.

(2) It can mean to ask people for their opinions.

(a) For example, I polled 100 people to find out their favorite

ice cream flavor: 75 liked vanilla; 20 liked strawberry; 5 liked chocolate.

(3) It can mean the place where people go in order to vote for

government leaders.

(a) For example, the American people in 2008 went to the polls in order to

elect a new president.
