Hi, is anyone able to tell me if the following sentence is active or passive and if the word "painted" is a past participle or a noun? I can't decide! :-?

Their house needs to be painted.

Thank you!

The main verb in the sentence, 'needs', is active.

What makes you think 'painted' in the construction following 'needs' might be a noun?

Sorry! Not a noun an adjective. I was thinking that "painted" was describing what the house needs. Would the sentence be "The house needs to be painted by them" if it is passive?

Thanks for your help.
