Adam's business was going bad

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Adam's business was going bad, and he felt as if he were dragging himself through the mud.

I'm not keen on "going bad". It's not an apple! I'd use "going badly", "going downhill" or even "failing". I'd remove the definite article before "mud".
