1-Not unkindly, he let us in.

Is this sentence correct? If it is does it mean that he was not unkind and let us in or that he let us in in a manner that was not unkind.

I'd say the former as it expresses the speaker's opinion. ;-)

This use of an adverb is a sentence adverb. It is used by the speaker/writer to comment on what he is writing/saying.
