I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

After Bob recovered from a life-threatening illness, people said that it was a miracle. He told them that miracles did not happen. It was simply his will to live that was stronger than death.

I am only wondering if "that" is optional or compulsory in my sentence.
Is it it correct to write:
"people said it was a miracle"?
"He told them miracles did not happen."?

"that" is optional in both.
