I have tried to use "stick to your guns" in my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes?

After Bob's wife died, their children tried to persuade him to sell the house and move to an old people's home, but he stuck to his guns and told them never to cross his threshold again.

It's okay. Some people might object to the term 'old people's home' (more commonly heard as 'old folk's home' in AmE) as not being politically correct. It's still commonly used however.

Part of it is PC, but historically such places had negative associations because they weren't nice places. They were frequently just old hospitals, with bad food, sterile environments, and little or no social activities.

Nowadays, the such terms as 'retirement communities' or 'assisted living facilities' are more commonly used. A lot of that is marketing talk as much as PC talk, as such places are now being designed to be homey, comfortable, and warm, especially the private sector ones.

In the UK, they're commonly called "care homes".
