I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural.

After getting a promotion at the company, Bob made a party for his colleagues and friends.

We also use "have a party" but that doesn't work if the party is for someone else.

What did you do for your birthday?
I had a party.

What did you do for your husband's birthday?
I threw him a party.

Getting/being promoted sounds better to me.

You could "hold" a party, as well.

You could, but I would still throw one after getting a raise. ;-)
