After ten years of working as a prison officer

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

After ten years of working as a prison officer, David had to quit his job because the amount of abuse he received and stress got the better of him.

I'd remove "of" after "years". I'd probably remove "had to". He didn't really have to - he chose to. I'd add "the" before "stress".
