Hi,

''When I had written my letters, I did some gardening.''

Taken from 'Practical English Usage' (page 399)

I'd like to ask if we can use 'after' instead of 'when' in the above sentence without changing the meaning of it because 'when' could also mean 'after.' (http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/when_3)

After I had written my letters, I did some gardening.
