Can 'in the aftermath' be replaced by 'after'?

In the aftermath of the scandal, experts offer their views on how to keep the Net a safe place.

Not as a direct replacement. You could say "After the scandal...." but aftermath does have a stonger suggestion that the scandal has had an ongoing affect.
