I am wondering how to use the word "alternative" - are the following sentences correct?

We would propose getting a specialist to be the main speaker at the seminar. Dr. John would be our choice. An alternative would be Dr. Xing.

It's fine, though you might want to specify that Dr John would be your "first choice".
