I remember vaguely that a friend of mine told me not to use these words with verbs in passive tense. For instance, can I say: "When I studied there, it was always very hot".

And whether he was right or not can you please show me other words or phrases that share the same meaning with those above.

Yes, it is correct!

But I would say...

When I was studying there, it was always very hot.

("Always" refers to an action that happens regularly {continuous tense} )

I've never heard the rule either and I'm very confused about how "When I studied there, it was always very hot" can be considered to be a sentence in the passive voice!

"I studied" = active
"It was hot" = statement of fact, not active or passive.

However, even in the passive, those words are fine.

I am usually met at the airport by a uniformed chauffeur. Your being here on a scooter is a bit of a let down.
I am always been served on fine porcelain. Take this paper plate away!
etc.
