[Grammar] Amanda helped Kelly to escape from the living

Are the following sentences grammatically correct?

"Amanda helped Kelly to escape from the living. She was still nervous while Amanda led her into the backyard of the house."

They're grammatically correct if you see the living as a noun phrase. I can't think of a way to understand the first sentence logically. Who or what are "the living" supposed to be?

If Kelly is a zombie, maybe she needed to escape from the living (the people who are alive) and feel safe with the dead. ;-)

"Amanda helped Kelly to escape the living room. She was still nervous while Amanda led her into the backyard of the house."

That makes more sense. It would be more natural to say Kelly escaped from the living room, but it's OK as you wrote it.

The idea of the zombie attack is very interesting . I had thought it was a practical joke where Kelly would pose as a ghost, but a flaw in the audio and special effects (like the smoke), begin to fail, so Kelly escapes from the scene.
