I read a sentence on a website as follows. The last sentence sounds awkward. How can I make it sound natural?

To humans, the wilderness may appear an eyesore and economically worthless, but to animals, it's what they need to survive. It is this, the need for environmental conservation, that the Society of Wilderness has been striving to teach since its inception.

Yes, I thought the sentence was nonsense. I should have written that it was grammatically​ fine.
