Studies have shown that aerobic excercise causes you to breathe more deeply and makes your heart work harder to pump blood. Aerobic excercise also raises your heart rate and thus burns your calories.

Can I replace the bold part with "... .Aerobic excercise also raises your heart rate, thus burning your calories" to make it shorter?

May I ask what the subject of the bold part is "aerobic exercise" or "raising your heart rate"?

Thank you Matthew.
I thought "the act of raising heart rate" would result in working off calories.

I think raising your heart rate is a means by which aerobic exercise burns your calories.

It's more normal to simply say that aerobic exercise burns calories.
