Essentially nothing - vacation is used in AmE and holiday in BrE, both to say "time spent, often travelling, for pleasure and relaxation".

what is the difference between vacation and holiday?

'Vacation' is taken in USA while going on 'holiday' is common usage in Europe.

A 'holiday' in North America is a special day that is traditionally celebrated with parades, parties, or ceremonies. (Independence Day, New Years, and Veterans Day). It is also a non-working day for most employees.
