Taipei has a larger population than any other city/cities in Taiwan.

Does "cities" fit equally well as "city" in the above? If not, could you come up with a reason? Thanks.

It has to be "city" in the sentence you have given.

To use the plural, the sentence could be:

Taipei's population is largest of all cities in Taiwan.

Thanks, Anglika.

But I have a question, though.
Doesn't "any other city" also imply the plural idea "any other cities?" If yes, why isn't it right to write "any other cities?"

It is the linking back to the singular Taipei. If you had said "XXXX and YYYY have larger populations than any other cities....", the plural will work.
