Does appraise used above mean that they tried to understand [STRIKE]those[/STRIKE] that vocabulary?
Not exactly. It means they thought about the words she used, the choice of which surprised them. They were probably wondering why she picked those words instead of more common ones.

It just means to evaluate her word choice. It doesn't mention whether the evaluation is comprehensive.
