Do I need to have an article before 'managerial approval' in the following sentence?

As per our HR policy, I can carry those days over into 2008, if I get managerial approval.

and perhaps even better:

"the' would indicate to the listener that you are referring to the 'approval' you mentioned earlier. But there has been no mention of any specific approval.
However, in the sentence,
'I am still negotiating to obtain the managerial approval I need to carry over some of my annual leave."

Here, you are talking about some specific approval, the approval you need concerning your holidays. It is not approval about any other matter - very specifically about this matter of your annual leave.

We 'ask for approval' and we 'obtain/receive approval' - no article.
'managerial' is the type of approval, the same as 'blue balloon', 'red bus'.
'I am seeking the manager's approval.'
The definite article is used, because you are specifically requesting it of the manager in the company organization - not the secretary, not the chairman of the board etc.: the manager who works at your company and no other manager in the world!
