I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct. I am not sure if my second and third sentence make sense in English.

As a child, David liked to listen to his grandfather's stories about wars, battles, fights and emigration. He and the old man travelled back in time to the strange places and met many interesting people David could not imagine they ever existed. It was like being in a trance he didn't want to wake from.

Using the definite article makes the reader wonder, "Which strange places?"
