"They moved along the wall as a way to guide them in the darkness."

As I understand this sentence, it means that moving along the wall was a method for them to guide themselves in the darkness. But then the sentence should say "as a way to guide themselves in the darkness", shouldn't it?

No, then you would have them guiding themselves. Instead, they used the wall as a guide. In effect, the wall guided them.
