I suspect Jerome K. Jerome was writing in a dialect in which the expression "as it were" comes out "as it was". The expression means "so to speak".

Or it's talking about how the stream was (swollen and rapid?). Or there is some proposal to take more than just the sufficient food. It could mean lots of things.

"Three Men In A Boat" you asked me not to read that novel because it was written in 1889. I stopped reading it. I am not following it as I used to do earlier. When you asked me not to read it I stopped. But I read it casually to know about the story. It is something that can be used in day to day life "was of the view" so I asked you about it.

How much of that novel can you understand without outside help? I have the feeling that that novel may be too difficult for you. Perhaps you could try something easier like the Twilight books. I haven't read them but heard they are very easy to read.
