Are my sentences grammatically correct? Does my second sentence makes sense?

As Peter and Joan were kissing under an old oak in the park, they heard the strains of cello music spilling out of the lit window in the nearby block of flats. They stopped kissing, captivated by a sonata and the tones which seemed to be floating in the air, outside this world, just like their love.

Perhaps:

the strains of cello music coming from a nearby flat.

They stopped kissing? That must have been some music. In any case, I don't think you need "the" before "tones" there.
