As Peter locked his door

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. I have tried to use "fall on" in my sentence.

As Peter locked the door and stepped into the street, a group of teenagers fell on him, kicking and hitting him. They ran away with his wallet and mobile phone.

The phrasal verb 'fall on' is rarely heard in modern English.

Instead, say attacked or assaulted.
