1-As we look at it, we are doing better this year than last year.

Has the expression 'as we look at it' been used correctly in the above sentence, if that sentence is supposed to mean:

'When we look at things, we can say that we are doing better this year than last year.'
'When we look at the situation, we can say that we are doing better this year than last year.'

As a Brit, but not a teacher, I agree with Riverkid, but I would probably have modified your original sentence to say:

"As we see it....." (unless they were actually looking at the figures)
