Sean Penn plays an ex-convict who swears to avenge his daughter's killer.

I thought he'd avenge her death.

It's OK in my books. Alternative usage:

On behalf of his daughter, he's going to inflict retribution on his daughter's killer.

:D

Perhaps:
  • He swears revenge on his daughter's kller.
