Dear friends!!!

Please have a look at my sentence: "This allows us to detect and treat diseases in their earliest stages and sometimes avert diseases by taking certain preventive measures."

The sentence has been taken from one of my papers and describes the technique of acupuncture. What do you think about the verb "avert" here? I've chosen it to avoid repetion because if I'd written "prevent" it would be slightly awkward because of "preventive measures". Is "avert" possible here?

Thanks

It's OK, but I would use something like avoid, as prevent would be repetitious.
