We use them both over here, but AS IN is more accepted these days.

The question is not about indefinite articles. It's about the first letter of the word "apple". The word "apple" (as well as the word "fat") is widely used as an example how the a(æ) is pronunciated. This is because, the pronunciation of the word "apple" (as well as fat, cat) is presumed to be learnt (or be taught) at the very beginning of the learning process.

Yes, exactly.

Let's say you had to give a code to someone over the phone and the code was VZTP. That might not be very clear over a bad connection. So you say "V as in victory, Z as in zebra, T as in Tom, and P as in paper" -- you can choose whatever words you want as long as they are clear.

There are words used by the military to represent those letters, but any words your listener will know will be fine.

KAABD K as in Kangaroo, A as in Apple, etc.
