Hi,

I have some difficulty in understanding the following sentences. Could anyone do me a favor?

At stake was the BBC's political loyalty, an issue which was framed in terms of its capacity to uphold the tenets of 'responsible' (that is, non-controversial) reporting in the name of 'impartiality.'

Thanks a lot.

This basically means that the BBC's political independence was at risk. The BBC is suuposed to be impartial, but responsible and not to display any party loyalties. I'm not sure what the context is, but there has been much criticism of the BBC under its current director for being pro-Labour.

My sense of it is that the BBC is neither impartial nor objective. At least, that's what the British sailors seem to think.

It is probably unrealistic to expect either impartiality or objectivity from a government-run station in any case. It doesn't matter what the government happens to be.

It's not actually government run- there is a distance, although this government has rather disgracefully put an asinine crony in there, which has damaged its integrity considerably.
