John said to his girlfriend:" Be there or be square".

What does "Be there or be square" mean?

Hmm, good.

But:

be (all) square
两清, 彼此不欠
打成平局, 不分胜负, 比分相等

I'm still a bit confused.

There's no need to be confused; they are two different things.

Be there or be square - You must come, otherwise you will be regarded as boring.

Be all square - Be even; a draw (in sport)

;)

Thanks Shane.

In "Be there or be square", square = boring?

It seems unlikely though.

We sometimes call someone a 'square' if we think they are uninteresting. If you have something interesting or fun to attend, you say to your friends 'Be there or be square'.

"I don't think I'll go to the party tonight, I have too much homework to do."
"Oh, come on! Don't be such a square! The party will be great!"
