Context: I'm explaining to a friend now in 2017.

Me: "Being raised as a liberal, Winston Churchill tended to accept the minister's proposal...."

In the above sentence:

1)Would using "having been" instead of "being" have the same effect and meaning ?
2)Shouldn't it be "raised a liberal" instead of "raised as a liberal"?
3)Can I use a colon after "sentence"? [Is article "a" necessary before "colon"?]

Having been raised a liberal... is better.

It's okay to use a colon there.
