I'm not sure of what "benchmark" means in the following.

It is not always clear at the start of gap analysis whether or not you need creative strategy. In many cases, benchmark results and expert intuition can fill part of the gap, but not all. You reach a point where you should stop and admit that you don't know the rest of the answer.

Is it the results of benchmarking? I wonder if there is a difference between "benchmark" and "benchmarking".

Thank you.

"Benchmark results" are the results which have been taken as the benchmark for other tests or experiments. "Benchmark" is not used as a verb there.

I'm afraid, though, that we are dealing with management-speak here though (in which 'benchmark' often is; so that 'benchmark results' are 'results of making comparisons with similar businesses'). The pure sense of 'benchmark' as an absolute measurement (a mark made on a workbench to ensure that matching pieces really did match) rather than a relative one ('as good as Acme's competing product, so good enough') is almost a thing of the past.

Did you know that Chipping Sodbury, although there are no navigable waters in the vicinity, has a yacht club? Their officers include: Commodore, Ships Lookout, Ship Singist, Pretty 0fficer [sic], Ships Ghost, Ships Rat, etc. The Club is proud of their safety record, (even if their scribe misuses apostrophes):

".. it was decided for safety reasons that members should not be allowed to own a yacht. This was a difficult decision, as any yacht club would want to have yachts; however, the founders have been vindicated, as the club boasts a 100% safety record. The club are fortunate to have an experienced ships lookout, John Powell, who, although blind, is proud of his safety record." (History of Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club)

I once applied to be a corresponding member, but they weren't too keen - the navigable river Vltava (Moldau) flows through Prague.
