Bob drank a few pints of lager

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. I am not sure if my punctuation is correct.

Bob drank a few pints of lager and, when the alcohol caught up with him, he became voluble and started singing.

If you leave the commas in the sentence, you should remove he.

Several might beat a few​, at least in BrE where we don't drink by halves. ;-)
