I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

Bob watched his friend drink heavily and wondered what had caused the pain he was trying to numb.

teechar,

I am only wondering if my original sentence makes sense in English. Is it possible to use "numb", meaning to alleviate the pain?

Yes, the original works too. I just suggested an alternative.

I would take your original "drink heavily" to mean that he watched him drink too much over a period of time. I'd take Teechar's "get inebriated" (I'd use "get drunk/hammered/smashed") to mean that he was watching him on just one occasion, perhaps over the course of an evening.
