What does underlined part mean?

Some people's phobia about cancer is so extreme that they can not bring themselves to think about it seriously.

No matter how hard they try, they can't make themselves think about it seriously.

In the idiom cannot bring oneself to do something, the image is that "doing something" is a destination to which the person chooses not to go.

I have looked up all dictionaries, but I couldn't find any corresponding meaning to this phrasal verb.
