when you've finished your optimum number of hours you must stop. You must not then sit around in the chair thinking about the work- that only tires without any learning. You must get out and do something. It doesn't matter what - anything so long as you are actively doing something else but work.

What word could replace but in the last sentence?

'Other than', yes, but I'm not that keen on the second suggestion.

Hi TDOL
But= 2 (prec. by can etc.; in neg. or interrog.) except, other than, otherwise than (cannot choose but do it; what could we do but run?). Oxford Dic.

I said I didn'tlike it much because it is a rather dated form not much used nowadays. It is in dictionaries and can be found occasionally, but it is not used much. ;-)

Check these examples from the British National Corpus:
http://thetis.bl.uk/cgi-bin/saraWeb?qy=otherwise than

(BTW- youcan get a list of examples of a word or phrase like this from the Word Checker on the site.

From the contexts, you'll see that they are not really the same style as the original post. I didn't say it was wrong, just that I wasn't keen on it. ;-)
