"By the author explaining in short what their work is about, the reader feels informed about what is going on in science." or:
"With the author explaining in short what their work is about, the reader feels informed about what is going on in science."

I "like" the second version but much better. After all there are two different subjects in the sentence. Which sentence would you consider the right one. Or is there no essential difference?

Both seem okay. I would choose the wording based on its flow in the paragraph.

Thank you for your help. I am really impressed by how quickly you reply. In my mind's eye I see you all sitting in front of the screen, never leaving the room, of course, and waiting for all those cries for help from around the world. Great job. ;-)
