Ukraine's opposition and the party of President Viktor Yanukovych made a final bid for votes on Friday, the last day of campaigning before the country's tightly-contested weekend parliamentary polls.

Why the author use "campaigning" here, not "campaign"?
What is the difference in meaning? I think "campaigning" means "the action of campaign while "compaign" is only an event.

Yes, I agree. It's the same as, "I was walking for a long time before deciding to take another walk". The sentence could be changed this way, "...the last day of the campaign...".

It makes perfect sense to me, "the last day of campaigning" means the last day on which campaigning was allowed".

It's not a matter of whether the sentence makes sense or not. I was pointing out how "campaign" could be used in the sentence.
