[Grammar] Can I go to play

Can 'to' be omitted in the sentence? Somehow, it sounds weird to me when I say it with 'to'. However, it also sounds weird to me when I omit 'to'. :-(

"Mum, can I go play at Ted's house?" he asked?

I believe it's acceptable in AmE (I don't know if that's the case in all regions). We might drop it in BrE (and not everyone drops it) in the imperative. A parent, frustrated with their child getting under their feet, might say "Go play!" or "Go play in your room". However, in my region, that would be "Go and​ play ...". We wouldn't use "Go to play ..." in that context.

An American kid would say "Mom". He or she would finish the sentence exactly as you've written it. It would be very odd to add "to" in American English, though "go and play" is possible.
