I was reading a book, and it mentioned a Chinese man who, when he wanted to say something important, he spoke "in high and beautiful Mandarin" instead of Cantonese. So, what's the difference?

i am current studying to be a sinologist

well in the past and still now, ppl in north chinese speaks mandarin and people in the south speaks different dialect. however, the Dialect in the south are some how related.

why the taiwanese speaks mandarin? is that they were forced by the KMT government to speak mandarin. before they only spoke taiwanese. they were basically told that it was low class to speak taiwanese and if they spoke it in school they would be given a fine ( and that was true starting in 1970s).

people in HK speaks cantonese becuase they were people who originally migrated from canton, also it was very close to canton.
