I believe I remember that copies of a business letter are to be initialled rather than signed. Is that correct?

I believe I remember that copies of a business letter are to be initialled rather than signed. Is that correct?
It has been usual business practice, but it depends entirely on either the person or the company requirement. There is no rule. In many cases copies are not even initialled, and the reference quoted is sufficient.
