Furniture is a collective noun. Ask "How are these kinds of furniture different?"

In American English, a closet is not an item of furniture. It's a miniature room for storing clothes or other things.

Which of those terms would you use for a kind of furniture where you can put your clothes, dishes, books, etc. in?

In American English a free-standing piece of furniture for hanging clothes is a wardrobe or in some areas, an armoire. If it has drawers for folded clothes it's a bureau or a chest of drawers.

For books, it's a bookshelf.

For dishes, it's a china cabinet or just a cabinet.

What if you put miscellaneous things in it, e.g. DVDs, bottles, flashlights, etc.?

It depends on what it looks like. It could be a cupboard, a chest of drawers, a closet or a cupboard.

For dishes, it's a china cabinet or just a cabinet.

Or also a 'hutch'.

What if you put miscellaneous things in it, e.g. DVDs, bottles, flashlights, etc.?

I'm not aware of any furniture specifically designed for holding miscellaneous things. As emsr said, if you're re-purposing said furniture for this, it's still referred to by the original name.

I have a drawer in one of my kitchen cabinets that I put smaller miscellaneous items in. I call it a 'catch-all drawer', but it's still just a cabinet drawer.

I put misc. things in several wicker baskets. They are not furniture though.
