That is not how we usually use "come to know."

Good question - you're observant!

"Come to know" more or less means "become familiar with, over a period of time":

I came to know Juan when I worked for his mother.

...or or "learned" (in the course of another activity):

I came to know about engine repair while I was in the army.

It's a good expression. The sense of it is that you arrive at (or come to) some sort of knowledge or understanding.
