hi again,

"The evidence locker consisted of an old strongbox at the sole disposal of the one man most certain to compromise it: the Chief"

what does "compromise" here mean? and disposal here is to use it or to throw it away?

It sounds to me that the old strongbox is used only by the chief, am I right?

tks,

"sole disposal = sole access and control

"compromise" = interfere with its contents in this context. It is the only place where evidence is retained, and the only person who has direct access to it is the Chief, so only he is likely or able to do something that will make the evidence unusable in a case.

tks,
