Non-fiction books are/talk about facts or historical events and information we may need for school studies.

Should I use 'talk about' or 'are'? Is 'school studies' a suitalbe phrase for the sentence? Can the sentence be improved on or is it fine?

Many thanks.

I think I would rather say -

Non-fiction books are about facts or real-life events and they often provide us with information we need for our studies at school.
